A recent incident in the Chiralla Forest Range has ignited a controversy, shedding light on the often contentious relationship between forest officials and local communities. According to an official statement released by the Forest Department, a team of forest officers was viciously attacked during an anti-encroachment drive in Jai-Ist block of Chiralla Range in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.
In the statement issued to The Chenab Times by the Range Officer, the forest officers, led by Block Officer Ajaz Ahmed Sheikh, were allegedly in an operation to dismantle an illegal structure built by an individual named Fazal Din on forest land. The situation escalated when Fazal Din, along with his sons and relatives, allegedly resorted to violence in response to the officials’ actions.
The incident resulted in Anayat Hussain, the in-charge Beatguard, sustaining severe head injuries. He was rushed to the Sub-Divisional Hospital for medical treatment and is currently receiving care. The incident underscores the risks and challenges faced by forest officials in the line of duty, as they strive to protect forest resources from encroachments.
However, the Forest Department’s statement presents only one side of the story, leaving critical gaps in understanding the events leading up to the clash.
Meanwhile, authorities are working to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice, the lack of a comprehensive account from all parties involved leaves room for speculation and debate. This incident serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics that often underlie conflicts between conservation efforts and the rights of local communities living in or near forested areas.
