In a momentous occasion, the 8th Muharram procession, which marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala, took place on the traditional route in Kashmir Valley after a hiatus of 34 years. The procession, starting from Guru Bazar and culminating at Imambargah Dalgate, was previously banned in 1989 but has been permitted this year, signifying a testimony to change and normalcy in the Union Territory.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid tribute to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and commended the devotion of the Shia brethren in Kashmir Valley. In a statement to news agency GNS, he stated, “I bow to the martyrs of Karbala and recall the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his ideals. Today is a historic occasion for Shia brethren in Kashmir Valley as after 34 years, the 8th Muharram procession is taking place on the traditional route, from Guru Bazar to Dalgate.”
The decision to permit the procession on its traditional route demonstrates the administration’s respect for the sentiments of the Shia community in the region. Lt. Governor Sinha assured the community that the government will always stand by them in preserving their cultural and religious practices. He emphasized the significance of this event, noting that it also symbolizes the positive changes and restoration of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
Addressing the occasion, Lt. Governor Sinha remarked, “Today, the entire world is witnessing the commitment and determination of the government to ensure a peaceful environment, freedom, love, compassion, and harmony in society. It is an occasion to reaffirm our commitment to peace and dedicate ourselves to the progress and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.”
The Lieutenant Governor acknowledged the strides made in recent years towards peace and development in the region. He pointed out that several historic decisions have come to fruition, contributing to a peaceful Jammu and Kashmir emerging on the horizon. As the procession serves as a unifying event, Lt. Governor Sinha urged the people to strengthen their bonds and unity, fostering an environment of harmony and cooperation.
