Nani, one of the most versatile actors in Telugu cinema, is back with a bang in his latest film Dasara. Directed by Srikanth Odela, this gritty action drama hit the screens worldwide on March 30, 2023. Nani plays the role of Dharani, a young man addicted to alcohol, in this pan-Indian film. Let’s take a closer look at the film’s highlights, plus points, minus points, technical aspects, and overall verdict.
Story
Set in the village of Veerlapalle in Godhavarikhani, Dasara revolves around the lives of Dharani (Nani), his friend Soori (Dheekshith Shetty), and others who are addicted to alcohol. Vennela (Keerthy Suresh), their common friend since childhood, is a significant character in the film. Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko), son of Shivanna (Samuthirakani), is elected as the Sarpanch and he looks after the Silk Bar. Rajanna (Sai Kumar) helps Soori and his friends in a case, and they elect him as their Sarpanch. Someone kills Soori on the night of his wedding with Vennela, and the rest of the film revolves around solving the mystery of his murder.
Plus Points
Nani’s performance as Dharani is exceptional. For the first time, the actor takes on an out-and-out mass role, and he excels in every aspect of the character, from attire to body language to dialogues. National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh gets a meaty role as Vennela, and her performance is flawless. Dheekshith Shetty’s natural acting is impressive and will undoubtedly earn him more roles in Telugu cinema. Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko justifies his good role with an impressive performance, and the supporting cast is also okay.
Director Srikanth Odela makes a nice debut with Dasara, and he excels as a director. The action sequences and dialogues are terrific, and Nani’s rugged look and performance in the action sequences are praiseworthy. The interval and climax are worth watching.
Minus Points
The screenplay is slow and predictable in the second half, making the film slightly boring. There are no funny scenes to break the serious tone, and some of the dialogues are inaudible. The placement of the popular track Chamkeela Angeelesi is a big disappointment.
Technical Aspects
Music director Santhosh Narayanan’s score uplifts many scenes in the film, and Sathyan Sooryan’s camerawork is terrific, especially during the night scenes. Editing could have been better, and the editor Naveen Nooli should have trimmed many scenes in the second half to make Dasara an engaging fare. Production values are top-notch, and the makeup artists deserve a pat on their backs for their amazing work.
Verdict
On the whole, Dasara is an engaging gritty action drama that has Nani’s outstanding performance. Despite some minor shortcomings, the film is worth watching for its gripping story, brilliant performances, and excellent technical aspects. Overall, it is a must-watch for all Nani fans and lovers of Telugu cinema.
