Sargam Koushal, a 32-year-old model from Mumbai, made history when she won the Mrs World crown in Las Vegas in December 2022, becoming the first Indian to do so since Aditi Govitrikar in 2001. In a recent interview, Koushal revealed that while she would be happy to work in Bollywood if given the opportunity, she is currently focused on educating young people about the dangers of drug use.
“We are planning a campaign in May or June for the youth to motivate them to stay away from drugs,” she said. “Right now, there are more important things to do.”
During a visit to her birthplace of Jammu, Koushal emphasized the importance of empowering women and young girls, and thanked her parents for their support. She also called on other parents, husbands, and community members to support women in achieving their dreams.
Koushal’s husband is an Indian Navy officer, and the couple’s move to Mumbai was a turning point in her life. “There, I found youngsters engaged in activities which we cannot even think of. From a young age, they get associated with the film industry, modelling industry, become stylists when they are still in college and it motivated me a lot,” she said.
Koushal expressed her belief that Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India, with talented and educated youth who lack exposure and opportunity. She also urged married women not to neglect their own dreams and aspirations while taking care of their families.
“It is unfortunate that the woman after getting married forgets herself and is overburdened with family responsibilities. They need to voice out their opinions and follow their dreams,” she said.
Koushal’s journey from Mrs India to Mrs World has been an inspiration to many, and she has said that while the responsibility has increased, she does not see any other significant changes. She plans to continue modelling, though teaching is her true passion.
Koushal’s win at the Mrs World pageant has been celebrated across India, and her dedication to educating youth about the dangers of drug use has been praised by many. Her message of empowering women and young girls, and encouraging them to follow their dreams, has struck a chord with people from all walks of life.
