US basketball authorities said Saturday that an American star basketball player being held in Moscow on narcotics charges is two-time Olympic champion Brittney Griner. The arrest came as tensions between Moscow and the West have soared over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian Federal Customs Service proclaimed that an American basketball player was detained when vape cartridges containing hashish oil were found in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.
The player won two Olympic gold medals with the United States, according to the Customs Service, but the athlete’s name was not released. Brittney Griner, a seven-time W.N.B.A. All-Star centre for the Phoenix Mercury, was identified by Russian news outlet TASS, citing a law enforcement source. Griner, 31, was a member of the United States women’s national basketball team that won gold medals in 2021 and 2016.
