No Public Executions Unless Directed, Says Taliban In New Diktat, says Report

Local officials have been told by the Taliban not to carry out punishments in public until an order from Afghanistan’s “highest court” is issued.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed in a tweet that the Council of Ministers has resolved that no punishment will be carried out publicly if the convict does not need to be made public and until the court gives an order.

“Public executions and the hanging of bodies should be avoided unless the supreme court orders it,” Mujahid was reported in the Dawn newspaper as saying.

“If the criminal is punished, the punishment must be explained to the public so that they are aware of the wrongdoing,” said a Taliban spokesman.

The Taliban’s proposals to revive amputations and killings as a form of punishment in Afghanistan were fiercely opposed by the US last month.

During a press conference, State Department spokesman Ned Price stated that the United States stands with the Afghan people, particularly members of minority groups, and that the Taliban must immediately stop their heinous acts.

“We strongly deplore stories of amputations and killings of Afghans being reinstated. The crimes mentioned by the Taliban would be unambiguous egregious violations of human rights, and we stand united with the international community in holding perpetrators of such violations accountable “Price has stated previously.

Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, the Taliban’s officer in charge of prisons and former Afghan justice minister, indicated in September that punishments such as executions and amputations would restart in the nation, according to several media sources.

The Taliban rule in Afghanistan has struggled to gain recognition after establishing its government. Aside from China, Pakistan, and a few other countries, the rest of the globe is keeping a close eye on the outfit’s actions.
